About Northeast State Wildlife Area

The Northeast State Wildlife Area is located near Holyoke in Phillips County, Colorado, encompassing a mix of agricultural lands, riparian corridors, wetlands, and native prairie. This protected area serves as critical habitat for a variety of wildlife species including waterfowl, deer, upland game birds, and migratory birds, making it a popular destination for hunting and birdwatching enthusiasts. The landscape features gentle rolling plains and stretches of the South Fork of the Republican River that enhance the ecological diversity of the region. Established to conserve habitat and provide public access for outdoor recreation, the area supports regulated hunting seasons for species like deer, pheasant, duck, and turkey, as well as fishing spots stocked with warmwater fish. Visitors also find excellent opportunities for wildlife photography, hiking, and wildlife observation along informal trails. The Northeast State Wildlife Area is managed by Colorado Parks and Wildlife, focusing on habitat improvement projects, invasive species control, and sustainable public use. While it does not have developed campgrounds or extensive trail systems, the area’s open landscape and proximity to agriculturally influenced wetlands present a unique setting for experiencing Colorado’s eastern plains in a natural state. Its rural location provides a peaceful escape with opportunities to observe mule deer, white-tailed deer, waterfowl migrating along the river corridor, and grassland birds not commonly seen elsewhere in the state. Overall, Northeast State Wildlife Area offers a blend of accessible outdoor activities and conservation value in a less-visited but ecologically significant part of Colorado.
